Endangered Species

About Endangered Species:

The world is descending into chaos. America is like a rudderless ship—its elected government gridlocked and ineffective. Rogue governments spit on Old Glory and defy a weakened America to stop them. Religious fanatics are dedicated to butchering all the world’s citizens who don’t convert to their beliefs. And the worst is yet to come. From Russian aggression to worldwide jihadism, from China’s designs on Southeast Asia to a morally and financially bankrupt European Union, from violent and expanding drug cartels to Iranian nuclear designs, the Alliance for Global Unity is close to achieving its goal—a single world government with them ruling it.

But appearances can be deceiving. A shadow government of old fashioned patriots is working to change the course of events. Armed with deep financial resources and critical positions in the military and intelligence communities, it just might succeed. The key to success is the world’s deadliest hunter-killer special ops unit—the Sleeping Dogs. But keeping the six Sleeping Dogs alive is challenging. An outstanding Presidential Decision Directive ordered the men to be terminated with extreme prejudice. An angry FBI agent, believing his wife had an affair with the unit’s leader Brendan Whelan, is pursuing him with homicide on his mind. A rogue Russian agent seeks revenge for thwarting his mission to assassinate the president of the United States. And, most chillingly, a huge and mysterious brute named Maksym is systematically hunting the Dogs down individually. The fate of the free world hangs in the balance. There will be blood. Lots of blood.

Discussion Questions:

1.     The story suggests that the seemingly unrelated global hotspots and growing threats to world peace are closely related and orchestrated by a powerful cartel. To what extent, if any, do you think there could be some substance to that concept? Who, in today’s world, would stand to benefit from that apparatus, and how?

2.     Could there possibly be a “shadow government”, such as the Society of Adam Smith, operating today? If so, who are they?

3.     The behind-the-curtain political scenes are portrayed in Endangered Species as power-driven, dangerous, and far from the public’s usual perception. Do you believe there’s any reality to that portrayal? Discuss.

4.     Brendan Whelan is the main protagonist and leader of the black ops unit, the Sleeping Dogs. As such, he appears to be cold-blooded and relentless. Does he have a softer side? If so, what demonstrates that?

5.     In the beginning of the book, FBI agent Mitch Christie is an unhappy, ailing man. Does anything happen in this book to change his situation? If so, what was it?

6.     In the polarization and turmoil of today’s national and international scenes, are the members of the Sleeping Dogs unit intended to symbolize or embody hope for a solution? Discuss.

7.     What is Rafe Almeida’s role in this book? Does it enhance the story or not? Discuss.

8.     Did it surprise or trouble you that the Dogs each have strong and divergent personalities? Why?

9.     Is it conceivable that a major political party in America could become the tool of a group such as the Alliance for Global Unity (AGU)?

10.  Do any of the characters or story lines appear to mirror the front pages of today’s news? If so, who/what?
